The Four Places ChatGPT Stores Your Information

ChatGPT has separate controls for memories, chats, Library files, connected apps, and model improvement. Cleaning one area does not automatically clean the others.

Before you start

Sign in to the correct ChatGPT account. Export anything you need to keep. Workspace plans may have administrator-controlled retention rules.

Terms to know

• Saved memory: a detail ChatGPT may reuse in later chats.
• Archive: hides a chat from the main list but keeps it.
• Library: saved uploaded files, managed separately from chats when available.
• Model improvement: whether eligible account content may be used to improve OpenAI's models.

Step-by-step

1. Open Settings → Personalization → Manage memories. Remove individual memories or clear them.
2. Review chats. Archive keeps them. Delete removes them from your history and starts the applicable deletion process.
3. Open Library when it is available. Delete saved files separately. OpenAI says deleting a chat does not delete files saved to Library.
4. Review connected apps and disconnect anything you no longer use. Disconnecting an app does not delete earlier chats or saved memories.
5. Open Settings → Data Controls and review Improve the model for everyone. This changes future model-improvement use for eligible content. It is not a cleanup button.
6. If you want to close the account, use the separate account-deletion process after exporting anything you need.

Things to know

Deleting a chat does not reverse model training that may already have occurred. Temporary Chat and business workspace rules differ. Menu names can change, so use OpenAI's current help pages if your screen looks different.

If something goes wrong

• If Library is missing, it may not be available for your account or region.
• If a setting is locked, ask your workspace administrator.
• If you need a record, export first. Deletion cannot be undone.

Pass when every box is reviewed in the correct account and you can explain which actions delete data, which only hide it, and which affect future use.
