Gmail Smart Features Privacy Check
Review Gmail, Chat, and Meet smart-feature settings, understand what each toggle changes, and choose the level of personalization you want.
Gmail Smart Features Privacy Check
Gmail, Chat, and Meet can use your content and activity to provide features such as inbox categories, Smart Compose, Smart Reply, nudges, and summary cards. Turning the setting off also turns off features you may rely on.
What this helps you do
Find both smart-feature controls, understand the tradeoff, and save the setting you actually want.
Before you start
Use Gmail on desktop and sign in to the correct account. Workspace administrators may control some options. Write down which features you want to keep before switching anything off.
Terms to know
- Smart features in Gmail, Chat and Meet: personalization inside those products.
- Google Workspace smart features: a separate control for personalization across other Workspace products.
- Smart Compose and Smart Reply: writing and reply suggestions based on supported settings.
Step-by-step
- In Gmail, click the gear, then See all settings.
- On General, find Smart features in Gmail, Chat and Meet.
- Read the listed features. Turn the setting on or off based on the tradeoff you want.
- Review the separate Google Workspace smart-features control shown nearby.
- Scroll down and click Save Changes when Gmail shows that button.
- Reopen Settings and confirm the choice held.
Google documents the controls in Turn Gmail, Chat and Meet smart features on or off and Use Smart Compose in Gmail.

The setting allows product content and activity to personalize supported features. That is different from claiming Google sells or uses message content for personalized Gmail ads. Google says it does not scan or read Gmail messages to show ads.
If something goes wrong
- If the labels differ, use Google's current help page for your account type and region.
- If features disappear, that is an expected consequence of opting out.
- If the setting returns, check whether a Workspace administrator controls it.
Final check
Pass when both smart-feature controls are reviewed, the change is saved, and you understand which writing, reply, sorting, or summary features will be lost.
