prompts.chat Setup and Search Guide

prompts.chat is an open-source prompt library. Its public CSV contained 2,169 records when this guide was checked on September 10, 2026, so the earlier “10,000 prompts” claim is not supported by the current public dataset.

Search the library on the web or connect its MCP server to Claude Code so Claude can retrieve candidate prompts during a task.

Before you start

For the website, you only need a browser. For the MCP setup, install Claude Code and Node.js, then decide whether you want the remote server or a local npx process. Review the library source and MCP source first.

Terms to know

• Prompt library: a collection of instructions written by many contributors.
• MCP server: a tool connection that lets Claude request data or actions.
• Remote MCP: runs on someone else's server.
• Local MCP: runs on your computer, though it may still make network requests.

Step-by-step

1. Search prompts.chat by task and read the full prompt before using it.
2. To connect Claude Code, choose one MCP command below.
3. Restart Claude Code if the server does not appear.
4. Ask Claude to search for a prompt and show it to you before applying it.
5. Remove instructions that request secrets, publishing access, or unrelated actions.

Things to know

Open source does not mean every prompt is accurate or safe. Counts change as the project changes. A community prompt can be outdated, overly broad, or written for a different tool. A remote MCP sees requests sent to it. Check its privacy terms before sharing sensitive work.

If something goes wrong

• If the MCP command fails, update Claude Code and check the repository's latest README.
• If no prompts appear, confirm the server is listed with claude mcp list.
• If a prompt changes your task, stop and paste only the useful lines into a clean chat.
• If the library result lacks a source, treat it as an unverified template.

Final check

The setup passes when Claude can return three relevant prompts with source links, waits for your choice, and applies only the prompt you selected.
